Debit Cards

Your SCU debit card is more than a piece of plastic — it is a secure, chip-enabled, tap-to-pay gateway to your checking account, with robust fraud protection and real-time controls built in.

Daily Banking

Every purchase, every ATM visit, every tap — backed by chip security and real-time controls.

Every SCU Checking Account Includes a Debit Card

When you open a checking account, a debit card is automatically issued and mailed to your address on file within seven to ten business days. Activate it by calling the number on the sticker or using the SCU mobile app, select a PIN, and you are ready to make purchases, withdraw cash, and manage spending anywhere the card network is accepted.

Need a card immediately? Visit any branch for same-day instant issuance on most checking account types.

Chip and Contactless: Two Layers of Security

Every SCU debit card carries an embedded EMV chip that generates a unique transaction code for each purchase, making it virtually impossible to create counterfeit cards from stolen data. For transactions under a certain threshold, the contactless symbol lets you tap the card against the terminal instead of inserting or swiping — same chip-level security, less time at the register.

Beyond the physical card, you can add your debit card to Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay. Mobile wallet payments use tokenization, substituting your actual card number with a device-specific digital token. Merchants never see your real account number.

Freeze, Unfreeze, and Control From Your Phone

The SCU mobile app gives you direct control over your debit card. Misplaced it between the couch cushions? Freeze it with one tap — no phone call needed. Found it? Unfreeze it just as quickly. You can also set transaction type restrictions (block international purchases, for example), configure spending limits per day, and set travel notices with date ranges and multiple destinations.

Lost or Stolen? Here Is What to Do

Step one: freeze your card immediately through the SCU mobile app or online banking. This blocks all new transactions while preserving any recurring payments you have authorized. Step two: call member services at (218) 555-0147 to report the loss and order a replacement. Replacement cards ship within five to seven business days, or you can pick one up the same day at a branch.

Under Regulation E, you are protected from liability for unauthorized debit card transactions when you report the loss promptly — zero liability if reported before any unauthorized charges occur, and a maximum of $50 if reported within two business days of discovering the loss.

Does SCU offer contactless debit cards?
Yes. Every SCU debit card includes contactless tap-to-pay technology — look for the four-curved-lines symbol on your card. You can also load your card into Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay for mobile wallet payments that use tokenization for even stronger protection.
Can I use my SCU debit card outside the United States?
Yes. Your card works internationally wherever the network is accepted. Before traveling, set a travel notice through the SCU app or online banking to prevent security flags on your account. You can specify multiple countries and date ranges in a single notice. A foreign transaction fee may apply on international purchases.
Are there rewards for using my SCU debit card?
Advantage and Premium checking members earn rewards points on signature-based debit transactions. Points accumulate automatically and can be redeemed for merchandise, travel, gift cards, or cash back deposited into your account. What Our Members Say

The Grain Exchange does a lot of catering and supply runs, so I swipe my SCU debit card constantly. The contactless tap feature speeds up checkout when I have a line of customers waiting back at the restaurant. And being able to freeze the card from my phone when I misplace it — which happens more than I would like to admit — has saved me more than once.
